PART 4

For three seconds, nobody moved.

I stared at the message on my phone.

You should never have hidden under that bed.

Then another message appeared.

Because now we know you’re listening.

My fingers went cold.

I slowly looked toward the window.

The man standing beside the black SUV was still watching our house.

Mark Ellison.

He wasn’t holding a weapon.

He wasn’t shouting.

He wasn’t even moving.

That somehow made him more frightening.

He simply stood there with one hand in his coat pocket, as though he had all the time in the world.

Chloe squeezed my hand.

“Mom, don’t go outside.”

“I wasn’t planning to.”

David gave a quiet laugh from across the room.

“You should listen to her.”

I turned toward him.

“You seem very comfortable for someone who just threatened his own daughter.”

His smile disappeared.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

He looked at Laura.

“You brought a lawyer into this.”

Laura didn’t blink.

“Yes.”

“You involved her father.”

“Yes.”

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

David nodded slowly.

“Then you already know enough to understand that none of this can be fixed by a courtroom.”

Dad stepped forward.

“You’re threatening my daughter again.”

“No.”

David pointed toward the window.

“I’m warning her.”

Laura took out her phone.

“I’ve already contacted the authorities.”

David smiled.

“Call them.”

Laura hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because by the time they arrive, Mark will be gone.”

I looked at the window again.

Mark was no longer standing beside the SUV.

My heart jumped.

“Where did he go?”

Mrs. Henderson looked toward the driveway.

“I don’t know.”

Dad immediately locked the bedroom door.

“Everybody stay upstairs.”

Then we heard it.

A soft sound from downstairs.

The front door opening.

My blood ran cold.

Dad whispered, “Nobody move.”

Footsteps.

One.

Two.

Three.

They entered the house.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

David looked toward the bedroom door.

For the first time since I had crawled out from under Chloe’s bed, he looked genuinely frightened.

“That’s not Mark,” he whispered.

I stared at him.

“You know who it is?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

The footsteps stopped downstairs.

Then a man’s voice echoed through the house.

“David?”

David closed his eyes.

“Oh, God.”

Laura looked at him.

“Who is that?”

David didn’t answer.

The voice came again.

“David, I know you’re upstairs.”

Dad whispered, “Sarah, take Chloe into the bathroom.”

I grabbed Chloe’s hand.

Mia followed us.

We moved toward the bathroom.

Then the man downstairs shouted:

“David! You have five minutes!”

A door slammed.

We locked ourselves inside.

Chloe was shaking so badly that I pulled her against me.

“What is happening?”

She whispered, “I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do.”

She looked at me.

“Mom…”

“Tell me everything.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I found Dad’s laptop open last week.”

“What did you see?”

“Emails.”

“Between your father and Mark?”

She nodded.

“They were talking about money.”

“How much?”

“Millions.”

My stomach twisted.

“Millions of what?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked toward the bathroom door.

“But there was another name.”

“Whose?”

“Grandpa.”

I froze.

“My father?”

Chloe nodded.

“Dad wrote that Grandpa knew everything.”

I stared at her.

“That isn’t possible.”

“I thought so too.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because Dad saw me.”

She started crying.

“He caught me reading the emails.”

I hugged her.

“What happened?”

“He didn’t hurt me.”

She hesitated.

“He just told me that if I told you, you’d go to jail.”

“For what?”

“I don’t know.”

I pulled back.

“What exactly did he say?”

Chloe looked terrified.

“He said you were involved before I was born.”

My breath caught.

“What?”

“He said you knew about the money.”

A heavy crash came from downstairs.

Mia screamed.

I covered her mouth.

Then silence.

Another voice spoke.

“Where is the drive?”

It wasn’t David.

It was the man downstairs.

David answered.

“I don’t have it.”

“You’re lying.”

“I swear.”

“Then where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“You had one job.”

“I did what you asked.”

“You failed.”

A loud thud followed.

Chloe buried her face against my chest.

I looked at her.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

“Chloe—”

“No, Mom.”

She grabbed my arm.

“You can’t go.”

“I need to know what they’re doing.”

“You’re exactly what Dad said you were.”

I froze.

“What?”

She stared at me through tears.

“Brave when you’re scared.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then someone knocked on the bathroom door.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

A man’s voice came from the other side.

“Sarah?”

My heart stopped.

It was David.

“Open the door.”

I didn’t move.

“Sarah, please.”

His voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Not threatening.

Desperate.

I opened the door only a few inches.

David stood there alone.

His lip was bleeding.

“Where is the drive?”

I stared at him.

“Why should I tell you?”

“Because if they get it, you’re all in danger.”

“Who are they?”

He looked behind him.

“They aren’t working for me.”

“Then who are they?”

David lowered his voice.

“People I was trying to get away from.”

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don’t care what you believe.”

He looked at Chloe.

“Listen to me carefully.”

She stepped behind me.

“Your father has made mistakes.”

David swallowed.

“But everything I did was supposed to protect you.”

Chloe shook her head.

“You tried to take me away.”

“Because I knew they would come for you.”

“You threatened Mom.”

“I was trying to scare you into signing the papers.”

“That isn’t protection!”

David looked devastated.

Then he said something I wasn’t prepared for.

“I never intended to take you to Texas.”

Chloe went silent.

“What?”

“The plane wasn’t going to Texas.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Where was it going?”

David looked at me.

“Montana.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s where the new identities were waiting.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“New identities?”

David nodded.

“For me and Chloe.”

I stared at him.

“And what about me?”

He looked away.

“I couldn’t take you.”

The meaning hit me.

“You were going to leave me behind.”

He didn’t answer.

“You were going to disappear with our daughter.”

“I thought it was the only way.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You weren’t protecting her.”

I stepped closer.

“You were kidnapping her.”

David looked at Chloe.

“I know.”

That was the first time he admitted it.

Then the lights went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Mia gasped.

Dad shouted from downstairs.

“Sarah!”

I grabbed Chloe.

“Stay behind me.”

We heard footsteps running.

Then a crash.

Someone screamed.

The lights suddenly came back.

David was gone.

The bathroom door was still open.

I ran downstairs.

Dad was standing near the living room, holding his shoulder.

Laura was on the floor beside the couch.

Mrs. Henderson was crying.

And the front door was wide open.

“Where is David?”

Dad pointed toward the kitchen.

“He ran.”

“Where?”

“Back door.”

I ran outside.

The driveway was empty.

Both SUVs were gone.

Then I noticed something on the ground.

A small black object.

I picked it up.

David’s phone.

It was still unlocked.

One notification was flashing across the screen.

TRANSFER COMPLETE.

I opened the banking application.

There was a transfer.

$2,750,000.

Recipient:

Robert Miller Trust Account.

My father.

I stared at the screen.

“Dad?”

He walked toward me.

“What?”

I held out the phone.

His face changed instantly.

“I didn’t do that.”

“I know.”

“No, Sarah. You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

He stared at the transfer.

“I’ve never seen this account.”

Laura came outside.

She looked at the screen.

“That’s not a normal bank transfer.”

“What do you mean?”

“It was routed through multiple institutions.”

“Why?”

“To make the money appear legitimate.”

I looked at my father.

“Dad, why would David send almost three million dollars into a trust account in your name?”

My father didn’t answer.

His silence terrified me more than anything David had said.

“Dad.”

He finally looked at me.

“I think someone is framing us.”

“Who?”

He looked toward the road.

“The same person who killed your mother’s business partner twenty years ago.”

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What does that have to do with us?”

Dad looked at Chloe.

“Everything.”

Behind us, Laura suddenly shouted.

“Sarah!”

I turned.

She was holding the black flash drive.

The one Chloe had found in David’s office.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

Laura’s face had gone pale.

“This drive isn’t encrypted.”

“That sounds good.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“It’s worse.”

She turned the screen toward me.

There was a single folder.

PROJECT HOMEBOUND.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Flight schedules.

Property documents.

And photographs of Chloe.

Taken from outside our house.

Some showed her walking to school.

Some showed her at the park.

One showed her sleeping in her bedroom.

I covered my mouth.

“How long?”

Laura scrolled through the dates.

“Eight months.”

Eight months.

Someone had been watching my daughter for eight months.

Then she opened the final file.

It was a document titled:

FAMILY EXTRACTION — AUGUST 21.

Today’s date.

My hands began shaking.

“What does that mean?”

Laura stared at the screen.

“It means this wasn’t supposed to happen tonight.”

“What wasn’t?”

She looked at Chloe.

“The extraction.”

Chloe whispered, “What extraction?”

Laura turned the screen toward us.

There was a list of names.

David Miller.

Chloe Miller.

And then—

Sarah Miller — DECEASED.

I couldn’t breathe.

Dad grabbed my shoulder.

Laura immediately closed the file.

“Everyone inside. Now.”

But before we could move, headlights appeared at the end of the street.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then another.

Three black SUVs turned slowly into our cul-de-sac.

Chloe grabbed my hand.

“Mom.”

I looked at the vehicles.

The first SUV stopped directly in front of our house.

The driver’s door opened.

A woman stepped out.

She was perhaps in her fifties.

Elegant.

Calm.

Completely unafraid.

She looked directly at me.

Then she smiled.

And I recognized her.

I hadn’t seen her in twenty years.

But there was no mistaking her face.

She was the woman from an old photograph my mother had kept hidden in a locked box.

My mother’s sister.

My aunt.

The woman everyone had told me was dead.

She slowly walked toward us.

“Hello, Sarah.”

My father went completely white.

“No…”

The woman smiled.

“It’s been a long time, Robert.”

Dad whispered her name.

“Evelyn.”

Chloe looked at me.

“Mom…”

I couldn’t answer.

Because Evelyn wasn’t looking at me anymore.

She was looking at Chloe.

And then she said the words that changed everything.

“You look exactly like your grandmother.”

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

On the back, written in my mother’s handwriting, were six words:

If Evelyn returns, protect my granddaughter.

I stared at the photograph.

Then at my aunt.

And suddenly I understood.

This had never been about David.

David had only been the beginning.

The real secret had been waiting for me for twenty years.
