I Hid Under My Daughter’s Bed to Catch Her Lying—Then Her Father Walked In With a Secret
PART 3
David’s jaw tightened.
Under the bed, my heart slammed against my ribs.
I couldn’t see the document clearly from where I was lying, but I could see one corner of the yellow sticky note.
There was a name written across it.
TEMPORARY CUSTODIAL AUTHORIZATION.
My stomach dropped.
Custodial?
Why would David need Chloe to sign anything related to custody?
And why had he told her that he could take her away from me that night?
I wanted to crawl out from underneath that bed immediately.
But then Chloe spoke again.
“I know what it says.”
David went completely still.
“What did you say?”
“I said I know what it says.”
Mia reached for Chloe’s hand.
David looked between them.
“Who told you?”
Chloe didn’t answer.
“Chloe.”
Still nothing.
David stepped closer.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I know you want me to sign a statement saying Mom is emotionally unstable and that I want to live with you in Texas.”
My entire body went cold.
Texas.
That was it.
That was why he had been pushing so hard.
David had never accepted my refusal.
He wasn’t asking me to move.
He was building a case to make me move.
Or worse—
To make me lose my daughter.
I pressed my hand against my mouth beneath the bed so I wouldn’t make a sound.
David stared at Chloe.
“You’ve been talking to your mother about this.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Chloe looked at Mia.
Mia shook her head slightly.
David’s eyes narrowed.
“You’ve been manipulated.”
“No one manipulated me.”
“You’re a child.”
“And you’re trying to make me sign something without my mother knowing.”
David slammed his palm onto the desk.
“Because your mother has been lying to you!”
Chloe flinched.
Mia stepped between them.
“Don’t yell at her.”
“This is a family matter.”
“She said no.”
David turned toward Mia.
“Your mother has been notified that you’re here.”
Mia’s face drained of color.
“What?”
“I spoke to her this morning.”
Mia looked at Chloe.
“You said your mom didn’t know.”
“She doesn’t,” Chloe whispered.
David smiled.
“She will soon.”
He picked up his phone.
My instincts screamed at me to get out.
But before I could move, Chloe spoke.
“Tell her.”
David stopped.
“Tell her what?”
“Tell Mia’s mom why you really brought me here.”
David’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Tiny.
Almost invisible.
But it was there.
Chloe saw it too.
“You can’t,” she whispered.
David slowly lowered the phone.
“What did you find?”
Chloe swallowed.
“I found the emails.”
My blood went cold.
“What emails?” Mia asked.
Chloe’s eyes never left her father’s face.
“The ones you thought Mom deleted.”
David’s face became completely expressionless.
Under the bed, I stopped breathing.
What emails?
What had Chloe found?
David took one step toward her.
“Where?”
“I copied them.”
“Where are they?”
“Safe.”
“Chloe.”
“You’re not getting them.”
David grabbed the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white.
“You have no idea what you’ve involved yourself in.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I know you paid someone.”
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Mia looked confused.
I felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath me.
David whispered, “Who told you that?”
Chloe’s voice shook.
“I saw the bank transfer.”
David stared at her.
Then he laughed.
It wasn’t a normal laugh.
It was the kind of laugh someone gives when they’re desperately trying to convince themselves that everything is still under control.
“You’re thirteen.”
“I can read.”
“You don’t understand financial documents.”
“I understood the name.”
David’s face changed again.
“What name?”
Chloe looked toward the bedroom door.
Then she said quietly:
“Mark Ellison.”
David’s hand dropped from the desk.
I didn’t know that name.
But whatever it meant to David, it terrified him.
He grabbed Chloe’s wrist.
Mia immediately screamed.
“Let her go!”
David released her.
“Where is the file?”
“I told you. Safe.”
“Where?”
“You’re not getting it.”
David’s voice dropped dangerously low.
“Chloe, listen to me carefully. If you don’t give me that file, things are going to become very difficult for your mother.”
That was the moment I couldn’t stay underneath the bed anymore.
I slowly reached toward my phone.
The recording was still running.
I checked the screen.
37 minutes.
Every word was there.
Every threat.
Every admission.
I tightened my grip around the phone.
Then I heard something that made me forget everything else.
A key turned in the front door.
David looked toward the bedroom.
“Who is that?”
Chloe smiled faintly.
“I told you.”
David stared at her.
“Told me what?”
“That I wasn’t alone.”
Footsteps came up the stairs.
Slow.
Firm.
Familiar.
My heart nearly stopped.
My father.
Chloe’s grandfather.
Robert Miller.
The bedroom door opened.
Dad stood there holding a thick blue folder.
Behind him was Mrs. Henderson.
And behind her—
A woman I had never seen before.
She was wearing a dark blazer and carrying a leather briefcase.
David stepped backward.
“Who are you?”
The woman looked directly at him.
“My name is Laura Bennett.”
David’s face hardened.
“I don’t know you.”
“I know.”
She opened her briefcase.
“That’s the problem.”
Dad looked toward Chloe.
“Are you okay, sweetheart?”
Chloe nodded.
Mia immediately ran toward him.
“Mr. Miller, he was trying to make her sign something.”
Dad’s eyes moved to David.
“Was he?”
David straightened his jacket.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
“No,” Chloe said.
Her voice was quiet.
“But it isn’t.”
David looked at her.
She pointed toward the desk.
“It’s all there.”
Laura walked over and picked up the document.
She read it carefully.
Then she looked at David.
“You prepared this without Sarah’s knowledge?”
David didn’t answer.
“And you told a thirteen-year-old child that you would remove her from her mother’s custody tonight if she refused to sign?”
Still nothing.
Laura nodded slowly.
“Thank you.”
David frowned.
“For what?”
“For confirming the statement my client gave me.”
David’s expression changed.
“Your client?”
Laura turned toward the bed.
“Sarah, you can come out now.”
Every person in the room froze.
David’s face went white.
Chloe’s eyes widened.
Mia covered her mouth.
Dad simply closed his eyes for a second.
I slowly crawled out from underneath the bed.
Dust covered my sweater.
My hair was tangled.
My knees were numb.
But I didn’t care.
I stood up.
David stared at me as though I had materialized out of thin air.
“You…”
I held up my phone.
“The entire conversation is recorded.”
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
I looked at Chloe.
She ran toward me.
I wrapped my arms around her.
She buried her face against my shoulder.
“I’m sorry, Mom.”
I squeezed her tighter.
“No.”
My voice broke.
“You don’t apologize for this.”
David stared at us.
“You planned this.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I wiped the tears from Chloe’s cheek.
“You planned it.”
Laura stepped forward.
“My firm was contacted by Mr. Miller three days ago.”
David immediately turned toward my father.
“You had no right.”
Dad’s voice was ice cold.
“You stopped being my son-in-law the moment you started threatening my granddaughter.”
David laughed bitterly.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.”
“I understand enough.”
“No, you don’t.”
David pointed at me.
“She has been keeping things from you.”
My stomach tightened.
“What things?”
David looked at me.
“You want to know why I’m doing this?”
“Yes.”
“Because you lied.”
“About what?”
He hesitated.
Then he reached into his jacket.
He pulled out another envelope.
He tossed it onto the desk.
“You really thought I wouldn’t find out?”
I looked at the envelope.
My name was written across the front.
SARAH MILLER.
“What is that?”
David smiled.
“Open it.”
Laura stepped between us.
“Don’t.”
David scoffed.
“She deserves to know.”
Laura looked at me.
“Sarah, don’t touch anything he gives you without reviewing it first.”
David laughed.
“You’re still pretending she’s innocent.”
My hands trembled.
“Just tell me what you’re talking about.”
David looked at Chloe.
Then at me.
“Ask your daughter where she was last Thursday.”
Chloe went completely still.
I looked down at her.
“Chloe?”
She wouldn’t meet my eyes.
“Where were you?”
She whispered:
“At the old warehouse.”
My heart sank.
“What warehouse?”
“The one near the river.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
She looked at her father.
Then at me.
“Because that’s where I saw what he was doing.”
David’s face changed.
“Chloe.”
She finally looked at me.
“Mom…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t skip school because I wanted to.”
I knelt in front of her.
“Then why?”
She swallowed.
“Because I was trying to find proof.”
“Proof of what?”
She looked at David.
Then she whispered:
“That Dad didn’t just plan to take me to Texas.”
My stomach twisted.
“What do you mean?”
Chloe reached into her backpack.
She pulled out a small black flash drive.
She placed it in my hand.
“He planned to disappear with me.”
The room went silent.
David’s face turned pale.
Dad stepped forward.
“What is on that drive?”
Chloe shook her head.
“I don’t know everything.”
Laura looked at the flash drive.
“Where did you get it?”
“From Dad’s office.”
David suddenly lunged toward her.
Dad caught him before he reached her.
“Don’t you dare.”
David struggled.
“Give me that!”
Dad shoved him backward.
“You’re finished.”
David stared at the flash drive.
Then he looked at me.
His voice became strangely calm.
“Sarah.”
I said nothing.
“You have no idea what that contains.”
“Then I’m going to find out.”
His eyes hardened.
“Once you do, you’ll wish you hadn’t.”
Laura took the drive from my hand.
“No one is opening this here.”
She turned to Dad.
“We need to leave.”
David smiled.
“You’re already too late.”
Everyone stopped.
Laura looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
David adjusted his sleeve.
“Check the driveway.”
Mrs. Henderson immediately ran toward the window.
She looked outside.
Then her face went pale.
“Sarah…”
I walked toward the window.
Two black SUVs were parked across the street.
My heart started pounding.
Dad moved in front of Chloe.
“Who are they?”
David smiled.
“I told you.”
His eyes met mine.
“This isn’t about custody anymore.”
He pointed toward the window.
“It’s about what happens when people discover what you found.”
And then one of the SUV doors opened.
A man stepped out.
Chloe grabbed my hand.
“Mom…”
I looked at her.
She was shaking.
“That’s him.”
“Who?”
Her voice barely came out.
“Mark Ellison.”
The man slowly looked toward our house.
Then he raised his phone.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message appeared on the screen.
You should never have hidden under that bed.
I stared at it.
Then another message arrived.
Because now we know you’re listening.
