THE GIRL THE DRAGON CHOSE”

Eight men. Full armor. King’s crest. And at their front, a man in a grey wool coat carrying nothing — which meant he was more dangerous than any of them.

Councilor Brennan. Forty years advising kings on threats to the realm.

He looked at the dragon with no expression at all.

“Remove the girl.”

Nobody moved.

Aldric stepped into the space between them. No weapon. Just his body.

“On whose authority?”

“The Crown’s.”

“The Crown is not present. I am the ranking officer. I have not assessed a threat.”

Brennan looked past him at Lena.

“Your name.”

“Lena Voss. Lower mill road.”

“And the creature.”

“His name is Ash.”

The crowd shifted — that change in collective breath when people stop being a crowd and become individuals paying attention.

Brennan studied Ash. Closed eyes. Jaw in a child’s open palm. Wings folded as small as they would go.

“Why did he come to you?”

Lena had thought about that for two years.

“Because I didn’t run,” she said. “He was hurt. Alone. I could see he was afraid. I didn’t know what to do with something that big being afraid of something as small as me.” Her hand shifted on Ash’s jaw and he pressed into it. “So I stayed.”

Silence.

“The Hollen Mine,” Brennan said. “Three missing persons. Found alive two days after the entrance sealed. The tanner described something large in the shaft. Kept them warm. Did not harm them. Appeared to be waiting.”

Ash’s eyes opened.

Slowly. Amber irises finding the light.

His gaze moved to Brennan.

Brennan held it. Ten full seconds.

Then, quietly: “Two years. And the only thing on record is three people brought out of a mine alive.”

He turned to his guard. “Stand down.”

The formation broke.

Aldric exhaled.

“She cannot keep it in a grain store,” Brennan said to Lena. “This requires a proper arrangement. It will take time. There are people in this city who will never accept it.”

“I know.”

“Are you prepared for that?”

She looked at Ash.

He watched her the way he always did. Not like a pet watches an owner. Like an equal watching someone they have decided to trust.

She thought about the mine shaft. The dark. Not a monster — just something hurt and frightened, the way anything is hurt and frightened in the dark.

She thought about not running.

“Yes,” she said.

Ash lowered his head until his forehead rested — gently, with enormous care — against Lena’s collarbone.

The crowd exhaled.

The woman at the wool stall bent down and picked up her skein from the cobblestones.

And near the south entrance, the baby stopped crying.

Have you ever stayed when everything told you to run, and found it was the bravest thing you ever did? Tell us in the comments.
